There is a lot of information and advice about Lyme disease from the public and from medical professionals. Some of this is good and some bad from both sources and you need to be careful when acting on that advice. That applies to this web page as well.

Lyme disease is caught from ticks that bite and suck blood. If diagnosed early it can be cured by a two week course of Doxycycline. If you can't get prompt treatment from a NHS GP do not be fobbed off. NHS GP's are notoriously for their ignorance on Lyme disease and seem to have a financial motive for not prescribing antibiotics. Concerns about the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics is no reason for not to treating the serious illness of Lyme disease. Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose and can not be diagnosed in the first eight weeks. If you are sure that you have Lyme disease consider buying Doxycycline, it's also sold as anti-malaria capsules. If you are healthy a two week course of Doxycycline will not hurt you and can save you many years of serious illness through Lyme disease. If you let Lyme disease get established then you are unlikely to be able to treat it on your own. Doxycycline is the mainstay of treatment, except for pregnant women and children who should receive amoxicillin or cefuroxime.

When you think about where Lyme disease occurs in the UK you might think of places like the New Forest. You might be surprised that it can also be caught in Berkshire. Devon and Cornwall has a high incidence. It's also common in Wales and Scotland. If you have been out particularly in areas with long grass then it's a good idea to check that you've not picked up any ticks. The back of the legs behind the knees is a favourite area. Dogs can also pick up ticks and then bring them into your house and also need checking.

The website http://iplist.awardspace.biz/lymemap.html has been created to give people that have caught Lyme disease a place to publicise where they caught it. So if you have had Lyme disease please visit it and add where you caught the disease.

The Journal of the Royal College of Physicians website has a couple of documents about Lyme Disease that are both factual and balanced.
