Skoda Octavia 1.8T (2000) rear nearside window lifter replacement.

How to replace a broken Skoda Octavia 1.8T rear nearside window lifter.

These lifters break every few years especially when the weathers hot.  You can now get just the plastic block for a few pound on eBay.  It's not that difficult to change.  As long as you've not been trying to wind your window up and down with a broken plastic block.  In which case you may have mangled the wire or the drive pulley and then you'll need to replace the unit.  When you hear a crack from your back door when moving the window.  Stop trying to move the window by motor, instead try lifting or lowering the window by pushing it.  If it moves then its likely the lifter plastic block has broken.  Tape your window closed with tape until you can take it to pieces.

Broken plastic lifter

You really need three pairs of hand for this job but if you are on your own you can use tie wraps to hold things in place.

Remove the motor and lift out the drive pulley.  Check it for any damage, also check the wires.  If they are ok then you can just replace the plastic block.

  1. Look to see how the wires attach to the drive pully.  Lift out the drive pulley. (You have already done this).  You now have enough slack in the wires to attach the new block.
  2. Fasten the sprung shafts with tie wraps so they are pulled into the holes.
  3. Carefully wind the wires back on the drive pully.
  4. Press the plastic gear back in it's hole.
  5. Remove the tie wraps.
  6. Slide the block up and down and make sure it moves ok and the wires are in the drive pulley grooves.
  7. Place the block in the lowered position before replacing the motor. (This allows you to connect the window glass when it's back in the door).
  8. Replace the motor.
  9. Replace the window clamp plate .

Tie wraps

  1. Put the unit back in the door.
  2. Lower the glass into the clamp.
  3. Tighten the clamp only slightly so the glass can still move.
  4. Attach the motor wire plug.
  5. Gradually wind the window up till it's nearly at the top.
  6. Check the alignment of the glass with the top of the door and straighten it if you need to.
  7. Wind the glass down, make sure that the glass is fully seated in the clamp and tighten the bolts.
  8. Re-check the alignment of the glass with the top of the door and adjust if you need to.  Make sure the window winds up and down smoothly.

Door

  1. Tape the plastic sheet back on.  I used Sellotape but it's probably better to use some water proof tape.
  2. Re-assemble the inside of the door.
